The stage is set for the five remaining students of Akademi Fantasia 5 to prove who will shine the brightest.
After nine weeks of gruelling training and having to watch their 10 classmates being voted off, five students will battle it out at the finals to become the champion of popular reality talent show Akademi Fantasia 5.
If the ninth concert last Saturday was anything to go by, they deserved to be in the finals.
Nineteen-year-old Mila (Nursyarmilla Jirin) from Penang, who performed Pudar, won the voters’ hearts and impressed the audience with her much-improved vocal prowess and showmanship.
Ebi (Ebi Kornelis @ Firdaus Yaimal), 23, from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, who sang Bukan Diriku beautifully, put up an impressive show as well.
Mila and Ebi also wowed the audience with a duet of the romantic song, My Heart, which left some in the crowd teary-eyed.
The most consistent student throughout the season, Candy (Candra Clement), 18, from Sabah, also made it to the finals.
One of the crowd favourites, Aswad (Muhammad Nur Aswad Jafar), 27, from Penang, gave a beautiful rendition of Mungkin Langitmu Lebih Biru, despite the fact he was still recovering from a fever and muscle cramps.
The much-improved Heliza (Nur Heliza Helmi ) 21, from Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, performed Ya Atau Tidak to prove her vocal range – she sings nasyid to rock and pop songs.
“It hasn’t been easy over the past two-and-a-half months for everyone involved.
“Every time we (the students and the production team) are criticised during the weekly concerts, we just pulled ourselves together and aimed for better results,” said principal Roslan Aziz.
Despite criticism thrown at him (from the students’ sub-standard performances to the technical glitches during production), Roslan remains unpeturbed.
“Annoyed and angry? No. I have been involved in this industry far too long to be annoyed by criticism.
“After the humiliation that I went through with my divorce, nothing that people throw at me can be worse.
“I regard criticism as a tonic,” quipped Roslan.
“We are here to produce results. It was hard on the students because they are still young and green in the music industry. But I do remind them that the outside world will be a lot tougher.
“Actually, I’m highly satisfied and am very happy with the students’ performance so far. They have done enough for me.
“For the finals tomorrow, they will have to do it for themselves, their parents and their families.”
For the finals – Mila, Ebi, Candy, Aswad and Heliza will each perform two songs, one cover version and one original (new) composition, composed by songwriters such as M. Nasir, Loloq, Ajai, Aidid Alfian, Razman Reza and Edry from KRU.
The champion will take home prizes amounting to RM500,000, including a recording deal.
